Trekking in the heart of Lake Baleng

Lake Baleng, also called Lake Sabichi, is a crater lake located in the region of the high mountainous plateaus of western Cameroon, in the Baleng chiefdom. It is located about 6 kilometers from the city center of Bafoussam.

Baleng is a town in the Mifi department, with a beautiful natural and traditional heritage like its Baleng Lake, its Meuhgam cave, its magnificent forest and its chiefdom.

Lake Baleng is a natural heritage that attracts many domestic and foreign tourists on a daily basis. Access is via long steps, which you will have to descend to the point of arriving directly at the edge of the shore.

On the spot, you will undoubtedly see a small hut on your left, and large stones on your right covered with salt and jets of palm oil.

Indeed, the edge of the lake is a sacred place of the Baleng, where they perform most of the time, ritual ceremonies and consider the waters of the lake as a source of purification.

The most brilliant, or the most trying during this visit, is to trek around the lake in its dense forest which encircles almost the entire site.

You will have to climb small slopes, cross stone reliefs, weave your way between trees, grab hold of lianas, and sometimes wait for other tourists who are tried by the route which lasts almost 30 to 45 minutes depending on the season.

The accommodation near the site in which it is possible to stay is the Tanste Tagne residence.

Access to the site is by car, no need for a 4×4 because the road is passable. You can also requisition a motorcycle taxi (bensikin) for a short round trip.
