Foray into the Penja pepper plantation

The geographical area of Pepper of Penja is located on the hilly reliefs of the south of Mount Koupé between the Littoral region and that of southwestern Cameroon. It is made up of the territories of the Communes of Manjo, Loum, Njombé / Penja, Mbanga, Mombo and Tombel, located between 100 and 500 meters above sea level and on basaltic subsoil.

This city is made famous by its famous plantation “La Plantation de poivre de Penja”, which hoisted Cameroon to the forefront during the Agricultural Show in 2014 in Paris, with its white Oku honey cultivated in the North, in tropical mountain forests. A 3rd prize was awarded to our Guinean neighbor, for his Ziama Macenta coffee. These are the first products from Africa to obtain the coveted IGP (Protected Geographical Indication), in order to be highlighted and protected in the 16 African countries members of the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), for their exceptional qualities.

Pepper cultivation was introduced to Cameroon by Antoine Decré, a banana planter in Penja, who decided to plant in this area, known for its volcanic soil, some Piper Nigrum lianas imported from India in 1958.

Allied to the qualities of the volcanic soil of Penja, they give it its unique taste. Although all the colors exist for this pepper (black, green and red); the white one is by far the most appreciated by gourmets for its spiciness, its spicy taste and a very particular aroma, unlike any other.

Visiting the plantation with a guide consists of walking and stopping to taste this real pepper, smell its aromas, and appreciate its flavor. You will be informed on the principles of collection, collection, processing and conservation.
